Golf Swing Speed

Golf swing speed has a huge impact on every golfer's game. Generating higher swing speeds is a big component to gaining more distance off the tee. Naturally, making a good swing and hitting the ball solidly is also important, but swing speed is an area that can greatly help you drive the ball farther.

When you watch professional golf on TV today, you often see golfers swinging the club at speeds upwards of 125 MPH and sometimes higher. Tiger Woods is a great example of this. He routinely hits swing speeds in the 125 MPH category. And the thing is he only weighs around 170 pounds. How can he generate so much clubhead speed?

The reason he is able to do this is due to his ability to focus and use his energy at the right time with the right technique. Of course it doesn't hurt that his range of motion is far beyond the average persons, but his technique is one that can be learned if you dedicate enough time to it.

There are drills and swing aids available that can help the average golfer greatly increase their swing speed. One of the better training aids on the market is the one endorsed by Vijay Singh called the Speed Stik. It is simply a weighted golf shaft that includes a speed meter built into the shaft.

Using a weight club is one of the best ways to increase your golf swing speed. Here is a simple drill you can work on at home that won't cost you anything to implement.

Take a golf club, preferably a long iron and wrap some weighted tape around it. You want it to weigh around 3 pounds or so. You can even use some items around the house for the tape to wrap around. You won't be swinging the club like you normally would, so don't be concerned with how it looks.

Next, hold the club in several different swing positions for 10-20 seconds at a time. For example, take the club back halfway and hold it there for 20 seconds. The same at the top of your swing and halfway back down on the downswing. This exercise will help you build a more powerful swing by focusing on strengthening those muscles that are specifically used in the golf swing. You will be amazed at how well this drill works.

This is only one of many drills you can do to increase your golf swing speed. Once you start incorporating them into your day when you have some free time, you will start seeing immediate benefits.

Golf Swing Instruction Tip #1

Work on developing a good basic golf swing. In order to play better golf and have more fun you need a fundamentally sound golf swing. So stick to the basics and work towards having an easily repetitive golf swing that eventually becomes second nature to you.

Golf Swing Instruction Tip #2

Use training videos to help improve your golf game. Golf swing videos are an excellent way to build a good solid golf swing. They allow you to watch them over and over again until you are able to correct any swing problems in your game.

Golf Swing Instruction Tip #3

Get the right training aid. Before buying any golf swing training aid be sure you know exactly what it is you need to improve on. For example, if you're having a putting problem, is it with distance control? Alignment? Swing? By pinpointing the exact problem you can then look for a training aid that specifically solves that particular problem.
